The Australian Dairy Industry - Cost Efficient Production
The Australian dairy industry is one of the world's two most cost efficient – the other being New Zealand. This is primarily because Australia's mild climate allows year round pasture grazing.
A typical Australian dairy farm is family-run, with a lower stocking rate per hectare and a considerably larger herd than in most other major dairy producing countries.
In addition, Australia's dairy manufacturing sector today is as efficient as any in the world, with typically large factories employing state of the art technology. All of these factors enable Australian dairy products to be among the world's most cost competitive.
Rapid Production Growth

The Australian Dairy Industry saw tremendous growth throughout the 1990's. Drought hit in the 02/03 season with volumes then recovering over the following seasons.
The 07/08 season is predicted to end around 5% down on last season reflecting the continuing drought across the nation.
Due to Australia's relatively small population, the majority of this increased dairy production will continue to be exported. Australia has a strong export focus with around 50% of total milk production exported.
Australia is already one of the world's three largest dairy exporters, now holding more than a 10% share of international dairy trade.
